Sunderland Town Meeting backs an $11.9 million override-contingent budget, sending the decision to a May 2 ballot. Finance Committee Chair Valerie Voorhees said the panel asked every department to model cuts of 5 percent and 20 percent after "significant fiscal challenges" emerged this year. The elementary school superintendent warned that without the $800,000 override, the district would need to cut a school adjustment counselor, a math interventionist and eventually art, music and library staff, saying residents "really do need to fund the base education" in the budget.
Town meeting also adopted a planning board zoning bylaw implementing the state's new accessory dwelling unit law after rejecting a resident amendment to restore a stricter size cap, and voted down, on a nonbinding citizen's petition, a bid to force the Select Board into defaulting electricity ratepayers to the cheapest aggregation option.
